NYU Takes Eighth Place at NCAA Championships

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's swimming team finished in eighth place out of 54 teams at the NCAA Division III Swimmng & Diving Championships, which took place at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, NC, Wednesday-Saturday, March 16-19.

NYU one upped their 2014-15 team this year, as the Violets placed ninth at the NCAA Championships. The Violets accumulated 132 points during the competition. University Athletic Association foes Emory University were crowned national champions with 560 points.

"Finishing in the top 10 at nationals for two years in a row is a huge accomplishment for this program and we will look to build off of our success next season," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "I am really appreciative of our swimmers' hard work and dedication and I am very happy that they had such a great season."

Over the course of the four-day competition, new NYU team records were set in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 400-yard freestyle relay, and the 800-yard freestyle relay.

Sophomore Isabelle Kitze won the consolation finals of the 100-yard freestyle in an NYU-record time of 50.88, breaking freshman Noel Leung's previous top time of 51.00. Kitze placed ninth place overall and took home Honorable Mention All-America accolades.

In the last race of the championships, the finals of the 400-yard freestyle relay, Kitze teamed up with senior captain Krista Traub, junior captain Elise Gibbs, and freshman Noel Leung. The quartet placed fifth, garnered All-America honors, and shattered the NYU record in the event with a time of 3:24.69, which was almost two seconds faster than the previous top time, set earlier this year by Kitze, Gibbs, Leung, and freshman Sarah Stone.

"I was extremely proud of how we finished up the meet tonight," continued Miele. "Kitze's 100 free was fantastic and capped off an unbelievable meet for her. The relay team also really stepped up tonight and dropped a fast time."
