Yellowjackets Open Season With Two Wins at Rochester Invitational

Backed by nine top-3 finishes and three victories, the University of Rochester women's swimming and diving team earned a 2-1 record at the season opening UR Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Speegle-Wilbraham Aquatic Center.
 
The meet, which was run as a triple-dual format, saw UR defeat Brandeis 303-57 and Canisius 243-125 while falling to NYU 260-110.
 
Sophomore Annie Thayer was a double-winner for the Yellowjackets, capturing 1st place in the 200 butterfly (2:14.20) and the 400 IM (4:47.41).  The other event win for UR came from junior Alex Veech in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.90).
 
Two UR relays touched the wall in 2nd place.  The 200 medley relay of freshman Natalie Wong, Veech, Anna Mucci and Vicky Luan swam in 1:52.14 while the 400 freestyle relay of Hongjue Wang, Emily Simon, Becca Selznick and Luan posted a time of 3:40.54.

In addition to her two runner up relays, Luan ended 2nd in the 100 freestyle in 54.46 seconds and 3rd in the 50 freestyle in 25.13 seconds.  Selznick also was runner-up in the 200 free (1:59.09) while Wang was 5th.   Joining Luan in the top-5 in the 100 free was Selznick in 4th and Simon in 5th.  Simon also placed 5th in the 50 free, touching in 25.53 seconds.
 
Junior Danielle Neu was 3rd in the 3 meter diving on Saturday while teammates Lillian Henderson and Jill Gingher placed 5th and 7th respectively.
 
The 200 butterfly saw freshman Tess Minigell finish 4th and classmate Shannon Cahalan end 5th.  In the 500 freestyle, junior Jen Enos touched in 5:23.82, good for 4th while Minigell was 5th right behind her.
 
Wong swam 5th in the 100 backstroke and 6th in the 200 back while Veech posted a 6th place finish in the 200 breaststroke.  Wang finished 5th in the 100 butterfly while Mucci swam to a 6th place result.
