Four Tartans to Compete at NCAA Championships

Four members of the Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team will compete at the 2017 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The championships will be hosted by the City of Shenandoah and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) in Shenandoah, Texas, on March 15-18.

Freshman Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) made the field in the 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard IM and 400-yard IM. She posted school-record times in all three events and will enter the meet with the eighth-best time in the 400-yard IM (4:25.31), 11th-best time in the 200-yard IM (2:04.55) and 17th-best time in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.25).

Junior Kim Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) will be making her first appearance at the championships after finishing seventh in the nation in the 200-yard breaststroke with a school-record time of 2:18.06. She will also compete in the 200-yard IM (2:16.48) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.79).

Fellow junior Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) will be at the NCAA meet for the second consecutive year. She made the field by finishing 13th in the nation in the 400-yard IM with a career-best time of 4:27.49. St. John will also swim the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.49) and the 200-yard IM (2:08.34).

Senior diver Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) will be heading to the championships for the third time where she was an All-America Honorable Mention as a sophomore. Kaku placed second on the 1-meter board at the NCAA Region 4 Diving Championships this past weekend. The senior will compete on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards in her final season of competition.
