Eagles Finish Second at Miami/SCAD Invites; Cindy Cheng Breaks 200 Back School Record

The Emory University Women's Swimming and Diving team wrapped up their three-day stretch of competition at the Miami and SCAD Invitationals on Saturday night, taking home second place at both meets.

The Eagles concluded the Miami meet with 643.5 points while the team posted 559 points across the three days in Savannah. At the Miami Invite on Saturday, Emory recorded 16 NCAA qualifying times with the Eagles registering three such times at SCAD.

After juniors Shelby Frugé and Isabella Issa swam NCAA "B" Cut times to begin the evening in the 1650 Free (17:18.72 and 17:19.08, respectively), junior Cindy Cheng set the school and meet record in the 200 Back with her first place showing. Cheng touched with a time of 1:57.26 after also breaking the previous school record during preliminaries with a time of 1:58.32. The prior school record was held by Anne Culpepper who swam a 1:58.62 at the 2011 NCAA Championships.

The Eagles saw four others post NCAA "B" Cut times in the 200 Back. Freshman Caroline Olson placed seventh (2:01.73), junior Sia Beasley was 16th (2:03.94 – prelims) and junior Phoebe Edwards who was 21st with a time of 2:03.15 in the C final. Sophomore Ava Salmi also recorded an NCAA qualifying mark, swimming a 2:04.44 in prelims.

Five Eagles registered NCAA "B" Cut times in the 100 Free with sophomore Fiona Muir leading the way with a time of 50.00, good for a second place finish. Senior Marissa Bergh was seventh at 51.31, junior Julia Wawer was ninth during the finals session but swam a time of 51.44 during prelims, senior Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe finished 11th, touching at 51.74 and sophomore Meg Taylor placed 20th with a time of 51.84.

Sophomore Ashley Daniels led Emory in the 200 Breast, finishing in fifth with a NCAA "B" Cut of 2:16.76. Senior Annelise Kowalsky placed behind her in 11th with a NCAA qualifying mark of 2:19.06.

Two other Eagles, both rookies, recorded NCAA "B" Cuts in the 200 Fly with freshman Maria Kyle coming in fourth at 2:04.67 and Maria Turcan adding a top-8 finish, placing seventh with a time of 2:05.54.

Emory finished the evening with a first place showing in the 4x400 Relay as Olson, Muir, Cheng and Bergh took first with a time of 3:21.91.

At the SCAD Invitational, sophomore Katelyn Mitchell placed second in the 200 Back and swam a NCAA qualifying time in the prelims 2:03.07. Senior Grace Swinnerton was third in the event and touched at 2:04.55 in prelims for a NCAA "B" Cut. Sophomore Hannah Lally finished third in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:21.22.
