Eagles Edge Out Queens University of Charlotte, 136-126, to Open 2016-17 Season

The Emory University Women's Swimming & Diving team began the dual meet portion of the 2016-17 season on Saturday afternoon, edging out the reigning Division II National Champions Queens University of Charlotte, 136-126, at the Madeline Jude Brown Aquatic Center inside the Woodruff PE Center. The Eagles registered five event victories and four NCAA B Cut times at the meet.

Leading the Eagles was junior Cindy Cheng who posted a pair of individual event wins, touching first in the 100 Back (55.17) and 200 Back (2:01.91), both NCAA B Cut times. Cheng added a second place finish, swimming the first leg of the 400 Medley Relay. The foursome, including sophomore Ashley Daniels, Fiona Muir and senior Marissa Bergh finished with a NCAA B Cut time of 3:50.73.

Muir and Bergh claimed first place finishes as well for the Eagles on Saturday. Muir touched first in the 100 Free with a time 52.13 and Bergh earned the top spot in the 50 Free with a time of 24.20. Both swimmers were also part of the 200 Free Relay that closed out the meet with a first place finish for the Blue and Gold. Muir and Bergh in addition to sophomore Meg Taylor and senior Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe swam a NCAA B Cut time of 1:35.59 to win the event.

Other notable finishes for the Eagles at the meet were junior Ming Ong in the 1000 Free (2nd, 10:34.54), the 500 Free (2nd, 5:05.61) and in the 200 IM (2nd, 2:07.64), Muir in the 200 Free (2nd, 1:52.90), senior Annelise Kowalsky in the 100 Breast (2nd, 1:05.99), in the 200 Breast (2nd, 2:24.38) and in the 200 IM (3rd, 2:10.09), Bergh in the 100 Free (2nd, 53.22), Sanchez-Aizcorbe in the 100 Fly (2nd, 58.02), junior Sia Beasley in the 100 Back (3rd, 58.96) and in the 200 Back (3rd, 2:09.94), Daniels in the 100 Breast (3rd, 1:05.82) and in the 200 Breast (3rd, 2:26.52), freshman Maria Kyle in the 200 Fly (3rd, 2:09.21) and in the 100 Fly (3rd, 58.24) and senior Claire Liu in the 50 Free (3rd, 24.27). The 200 Free Relay B team of Liu, freshman Nadia Riverso, sophomore Hannah Baratz and junior Julia Wawer added a second place finish in the event, touching with a time of 1:36.42.
