Emory Women's Swimming & Diving - UAA Champions for 19th Consecutive Year

For the 19th consecutive year and the 25th time in program history, the Emory University Women's Swimming and Diving team captured the University Athletic Association team title as the UAA Championships concluded on Saturday night at the Ratner Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Chicago.

The Eagles finished with 1,924.5 points, more than 450 points ahead of the next closest program. Rounding out the UAA team standings were New York University (1,468.5), Chicago (1,440), Carnegie Mellon (1,091), Washington (1,073), Rochester (681.5), Case Western Reserve (552.5) and Brandeis (209).

Junior Cindy Cheng was tabbed as the UAA Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive year after earning event titles in the 500 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke (55.07 – UAA Record) and 200 Backstroke (1:58.46 – UAA Record) and was part of four relay title teams, helping to set new Association records in all four events.

Freshman Maria Turcan was selected as the UAA Rookie of the Year after taking home the event title in the 200 Butterfly and adding All-UAA honors in the 500 Freestyle, placing second. In addition, she finished seventh in the 400 IM.

Head Coach Jon Howell and assistants Cindy Fontana, Chris Marshall, John Petroff and Ross Spock were named the UAA Women's Coaching Staff of the Year for the fourth straight year and ninth time in Emory women's swimming and diving history.

Sophomore Julia Durmer began the final night of events with her second UAA title of the meet, winning the 1,650 Freestyle in a time of 17:00.37. Junior Ming Ong added All-UAA honors taking home a third-place finish with a time of 17:10.94.

Cheng, sophomore Fiona Muir and senior Annelise Kowalsky continued their impressive championship meet performances as the trio all claimed their third individual event title in consecutive events. Cheng was crowned the 200 Backstroke champion for the third straight year, setting a new UAA record in the process with a time of 1:58.46. Muir won the 100 Freestyle to become a back-to-back champion, touching first in a time of 50.21. And Kowalsky won the 200 Breaststroke for the first time in her career with a time of 2:16.64.

Freshman Maria Turcan rounded out the individual performances, becoming a UAA champion in the 200 Butterfly. Turcan touched at 2:04.14, narrowly edging out teammate Megan Campbell by .03 seconds (2:04.17).

The 400 Freestyle Relay consisting of Muir, Cheng and seniors Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe and Marissa Bergh closed out the festivities, winning the event in a time of 3:22.32, setting an Association record in the process.

Adding All-UAA honors for the Eagles on Saturday were Bergh in the 100 Freestyle (3rd, 51.15) and sophomore Hannah Lally in the 200 Breaststroke (2:20.62).

Over three days of competition, Emory won 17 of the 18 swimming events contested while setting eight UAA records and amassing 32 All-UAA finishes.
