The New York University women's swimming & diving team opened its 2016-17 season with a 205-87 victory over SUNY Cortland on Saturday, October 8, at the Palladium Athletic Facility in Manhattan.

Senior captain Elise Gibbs won the 50-yard freestyle (24.73) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.86).

"Today was really a culmination of all of our hard work in practice," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "We didn't swim our best times, but that's not really what you're looking for at this point in the season. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do next week against West Chester."

A quartet of freshmen double-winners also starred for the Violets in their collegiate debuts. Jaime Robinson was victorious in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:41.15) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:16.61), while Kathy Lin took first in the 100-yard butterfly (58.90) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.84). Classmate Julien Zhu won both the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.57) and the 200-yard IM (2:11.48).

On the diving boards, freshman Carmen White placed first in both the three-meter (248.47) and the one-meter (279.68) competitions.

"I couldn't be more pleased with how things went today. The goal is to score in the 200's, and four of our five divers hit that mark," said Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "Cortland had some outstanding divers. This was a great first meet for us and for me as the new head coach."
