The New York University women's swimming & diving team is in second place out of six teams after day two of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Winter Invitational, which is being held Friday-Sunday, December 2-4, in Cambridge, MA.
The Violets trail the host Engineers by a narrow 12-point margin (977-965). Tufts University sits in third place with 439 points.
Julien Zhu broke the NYU record during her 400-yard IM triumph, posting a time of 4:24.75. The freshman bested the previous record of 4:31.18, set by Erika Norris during the 2003-04 season.
"I am very impressed with our performance tonight," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "Our team is getting stronger and stronger every day, so I am very excited to see how we perform tomorrow."
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
- Ashlie Pankonin (257.35) and Nia Sorgente (247.65) took second and fourth place in the three-meter diving competition, respectively.
- Carmen White (264.10) and Kelly Ryser (250.95) placed second and third in the one-meter event, respectively.
"Ashlie had a great weekend and we had four women qualify for the zone championships on the one-meter and three on the three-meter," explained Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "I'm very proud of how this team competed at a high level against tough competition."
- The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Noel Leung, Honore Collins, Sarah Stone, and Elise Gibbs was victorious, turning in a time of 1:34.40.
- Leung and Gibbs teamed up with May Li and Serena Lightstone to win the 400-yard medley relay (3:46.26).
