NYU Finishes Second at UAA Championships

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's swimming & diving team finished in second place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, which were held Wednesday-Saturday, February 8-11, at the University of Chicago in Chicago, IL.

The Violets finished the eight-team competition with 1468.5 points, as Emory University won its 19th-consecutive title with 1924.5 points. Host Chicago finished third with 1,440 points.

The result for NYU tied its highest finish ever, last accomplished in 2009.

"I was very proud of our effort this weekend. It was great to see our swimmers perform well during this grueling meet," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "I was excited about our overall performance and I look forward to getting back to work in preparation for the NCAA Championships."

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Elise Gibbs took second in a time of 2:20.24 while Ashley Corley (2:22.68) and Elle Tucker (2:26.65) took sixth and eighth, respectively. Gibbs was also a member of the Violets' fourth-place 400-yard medley relay squad, which also included Honore Collins, Sarah Stone and Noel Leung (3:27.52).

Jaime Robinson also posted a second-place finish for NYU, finishing the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17.07.39. Haley Wen took sixth (17:19.85) and Grace Wakabayashi captured seventh (17:26.42).

In the one-meter diving competition, Carmen White (477.25), Ashlie Pankonin (443.15) and Nia Sorgente (430.70) finished second, fifth and seventh, respectively.

"This was easily the best UAA field I've ever seen, so to have three divers in the final was amazing," said Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "Carmen got straight 8's to claim second when she needed to, Ashlie was great but missed just one dive, and Nia just missed on a few dives. Overall, I couldn't be happier."
