Emory Women's Swimming & Diving Doubles UAA Lead Behind Friday Sweep

The Emory University Women's Swimming and Diving team put forth a dominating showing on Friday night at the UAA Championships, sweeping all seven swimming events contested on the evening.

With the Friday sweep, the Eagles more than doubled their lead heading into the final day of competition, holding a 560 point edge over the next closest team. NYU held onto their second place spot with 901 points followed by Chicago (881.5), Washington (840.5), Carnegie Mellon (837.5), Case Western Reserve (530), Rochester (422) and Brandeis (312.5).

Of the five individual event winners on Friday, three were of the repeat variety as senior Cindy Cheng and juniors Fiona Muir and Julia Durmer defended their titles in their respective events. Cheng set a new UAA and school record in the 100 Backstroke, taking the final heat in a time of 54.16. In the 100 Freestyle, Muir raced to a time of 1:50.27 to edge out a pair of teammates and in the 400 IM, Durmer claimed the win, touching at 4:20.38.

Senior Megan Campbell regained her spot as the top 100 Butterfly swimmer in the conference, taking home the top honors with a time of 54.66, just .03 seconds off UAA-record pace. She was the 2016 winner in the event. In the 100 Breaststroke, junior Ashley Daniels captured her first-ever UAA solo title to round out the individual victors for the Eagles on Friday, winning the event at 1:03.35.

In addition to the five individual champions, Emory improved to 4-0 in relay events, winning both the 200 Medley and 800 Freestyle relays. In the 200 Medley, Cheng, Campbell, senior Hannah Lally and junior Meg Taylor posted a mark of 1:42.06 and in the 800 Freestyle, Cheng, Muir and seniors Ming Ongand Julia Wawer, just missed a UAA record time, throwing down a time of 7:25.44.

Taylor and Wawer earned All-UAA honors in the 200 Freestyle with times of 1:51.76 and 1:51.85, respectively. Ong and sophomore Caroline Olson turned in second place finishes with Ong in the 400 IM (4:21.81) and Olson in the 100 Backstroke (55.60). And Lally and freshman Rachel Song claimed third place efforts for the Eagles with Lally in the 100 Breast (1:03.64) and Song in the 100 Fly (55.88).
