Yewllowjackets Fifth After Opening Session of Bomber Invitational

The University of Rochester women's swimming and diving team sits in fifth place of 11 teams after day one of competition at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational on Friday evening at the Ithaca Aquatic Center.
 
Overall, a total of 16 individuals and one relay scored for Rochester, accumulating 179 points on the day.  Division I Cornell leads the team championship scoring with 597 points, SUNY Geneseo is second with 281, host Ithaca is third with 230 and Springfield sits fourth with 227 points.
 
Leading the way for Rochester was Becca Selznick who was the top UR finisher in two events and was on Rochester's top relay squad in the 200 medley relay.  Selznick was first to the wall among Yellowjackets in the 500 freestyle, placing 9th in a time of 5:11.46, earning 20 team points. She also touched first in the 50 freestyle, clocking in at 24.64 seconds, finishing 14th.
  

The 200 medley relay team of Erica Hughes, Sofia Guarnieri, Monica Jackson and Selznick wound up 4th with its time of 1:50.14.
 
Joining Selznick in the scoring column in the 500 freestyle were Tess Minigell who finished 13th (5:16.07), Emily Brzac in 19th (5:23.66), Caitlynn Weeden in 21st (5:24.29) and Emma Dowd in 22nd (5:24.34).
 
Weeden and Hughes also scored in the 50 freestyle, with Weeden finishing 22nd in 25.00 seconds and Hughes ending up 23rd in 25.04 seconds.
 
Six from Rochester also made the top-24 in the 200 individual medley, led by Amina N'Gambwa's 12th place finish in 2:13.08. Shannon Cahalan was 13th in 2:13.74 while Anna Cook finished 17th in 2:14.99. Finishing off the Yellowjacket scorers in that event were Jackson in 18th (2:15.59), Alyssa Gardiner in 22nd (2:15.96) and Annie Thayer in 24th (2:16.63).
 
The 3-meter diving competition also took place, and UR's two divers, Paige Hayward and Jenna Zhang finished in 18th and 19th respectively. Hayward scored 279.75 while Zhang earned 267.20 points from the judges.
