NYU Women's Tennis Completes Play at NY State Championships

The New York University women's tennis team closed out its fall season on the final day of play at the New York State Championships on Sunday, October 13, in Ithaca, NY. The tournament was hosted by Ithaca College.

Two Violets were in action in their respective singles finals. Junior Mari Tzakis advanced to the third singles finals as the #1 seed, but fell to the #3 seed from Skidmore College.

Sophomore Madeline King advanced to the finals in fourth singles as the #1 seed, as well, but ultimately fell to the second seed from Vassar College.

"I felt the difference in Madeline's match was her opponent's ability to control the points," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "She got off to a bit of a slow start and her opponent dictated play more and that was the difference. With Mari, it was close throughout. Ultimately it came down to a miss or a lost opportunity."

FALL SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:

- The Violets opened the season with a dominant victory at The College of New Jersey Invitational, winning 10 of 16 singles matches and five of eight doubles matches.

- NYU continued its success at the Vassar College Scramble, going 12-3 in singles play and a perfect 11-0 in doubles.

- The following weekend, Alison Wang and Ashley Masanto advanced to the Round of 16 in singles play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Championships. The duo advanced to the finals in doubles play, as well.

"The women played well overall and we had strong results this fall," said Choy. "We hope to build on that when we start in the spring."

The Violets will be back in action on March 7 in Haverford, PA, when they begin dual play in the spring at Haverford College.
