Washington Women’s Tennis Competes at USTA/ITA Central Regional

Greencastle, Ind., Sept. 23, 2013 – Freshman Rebecca Ho posted an 8-2 record and advanced to the singles semifinal to lead the Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team at the USTA/ITA Central Regional hosted by DePauw University Friday-Monday, Sept. 20-23.

As the No. 19 singles seed, Ho won five matches to advance to the semifinals, where she fell to University of Chicago's Helen Svidzhkov, the No. 13-seed, 7-5, 6-4. During her run to the semifinals, Ho knocked off the No. 12-seed Carolyn Huerth of DePauw (3-6, 6-1, 6-3) and seventh-seeded Kim Sawyer of Augustana (6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3)). Sophomore Jamie Silverberg also advanced to the singles quarterfinals before falling 6-1, 6-2 to top-seeded Megan Tang of Chicago.

Ho also teamed with senior Betsy Edershile to advance to the doubles quarterfinal before falling 8-5 to eventual champions Caroline Emhardt and Maggie MacPhail of DePauw. The unseeded Washington U. duo upset No. 12-seed Julie Stroyne and Sammi Kruger of Otterbein, 8-6, before taking down sixth-seeded Sruthi Ramaswami and Maggie Schumann of Chicago, 8-5.

Senior Corinne Rauck and sophomore Erin Wong, who entered the doubles tournament as the No. 7 seed, were upset in a 9-8 (3) first-round loss, but bounced back to win the consolation bracket. In their first tournament as a doubles team, Rauck and Wong won five-straight matches after the loss to claim the consolation title.

Washington U. opens its spring schedule Sunday, Feb. 16, against DePauw.

Notes:
• All 10 Washington U. players won at least one match at the tournament.
• As a team, the Bears posted a record of 45-19 at the ITA Central Regional.
• Rauck brought her career wins total to 76.
• Silverberg and fellow sophomore Aly Coran both surpassed 45 career victories over the weekend.
