From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics
The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked
eighth nationally, played No. 12 University of Chicago in the third
round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship on
Saturday, May 10 in Chicago, Illinois. The Tartans defeated the
Maroons 5-2 and improve to 19-4 while Chicago finishes its season
with a dual record of 12-11.
For the second straight day, Carnegie Mellon took a 2-1 lead
following doubles play. The Tartans No. 1 and No. 2 tandems
both fought back from a 6-5 deficit to win 8-6. Senior Katie
Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) and
junior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines)
defeated Megan Tang and Tiffany Chen at No. 1 while the duo of
junior Angela Pratt(Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) and
freshman Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South)
won at No. 2 over Sruthi Ramashami and Helen Sdvizhkov.
Raschke and Cecil gave the Tartans another edge at 4-2, as both won
in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 6 singles after being tied
2-2. Raschke won 7-6, 6-1 in the sixth spot just before Cecil
won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. The Tartans confirmed a trip to the
Elite Eight when sophomore Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough,
Calif./Burlingame) beat Sdvizhkov 6-1, 7-5.
Carnegie Mellon will begin play in the national quarterfinals on
May 19 which will be held in Claremont, California. This is
the Tartans first appearance on this stage since 2012 and fourth
overall.
