From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics
The eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team
began the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship
Tournament with a 9-0 win over the University of Rochester on
Friday morning, April 25 in Altamonte Springs, Florida. With the
win, the Tartans improve to 16-3 overall while Rochester falls to
5-10.
The Tartans started the match sweeping doubles for the ninth time
this season. The tandem of junior Angela
Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) and
freshman Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South)
got the Tartans on the board first with an 8-0 victory over Molly
Goodman and Tatyana Lemelman at No. 2 doubles. Carnegie
Mellon then pushed the lead to 3-0 with 8-1 victories at No.1 and
No. 3 doubles.
The number one pair of junior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar,
Calif./Torrey Pines) and freshman Vanessa
Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel)
defeated Cara Genbauffe and Christine Ho while the number three
doubles pair of senior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach,
Calif./Ocean View) and sophomore Brooke
Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) downed Lauren Zickar and
Mariana Flores Kim.
Sophomore Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee
Valley) won her No. 5 singles match 6-0, 6-1 over Kim as
junior Lydia Utkin (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) won at
No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-1 over Zickar to clinch the Tartan
victory.
Cecil, Torres, sophomore Elizabeth Martin (St. Simons
Island, Ga./Frederica Academy) and Raschke all turned in straight
set victories at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles,
respectively. Cecil won 6-1, 6-1 over Ho, Torres defeated Genbauffe
6-2, 6-1, Martin won 6-0, 6-0 against Goodman while Raschke
defeated Darby McCall 6-3, 6-1.
