From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
Sophomore Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) went 2-0 to lead the No. 23 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over No. 22 Brandeis University (Mass.) in the fifth-place match of the 2014 University Athletic Association Championship at Sanlando Park.
The Spartans (11-10, 2-1 UAA) match their best finish at the UAA Championship as the program also finished fifth in 1997. With the loss, Brandeis falls to 11-11 overall and 1-2 in the UAA.
Khadilkar and freshman doubles partner Sarah Berchuck (Dallas, Texas/Baylor School & Suffield Academy) won at No. 2 by a score of 8-4 over the partnership of Marissa Lazar/Allyson Bernstein. CWRU took a 2-1 lead into singles as sophomore Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) & junior Marianne Bonanno (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) won at No. 1, also, by an 8-4 tally.
In singles play, Khadilkar earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4 while sophomore Taylor Sweeney (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) clinched the fifth and decisive point for the Spartans. Also earning a victory was sophomore Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake). Sweeney won, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3, while Djohan did not drop a game at No. 6.
