Emory Wins 25th UAA Women's Tennis Championship

Emory Wins 25th UAA Women's Tennis Championship

Emory University senior Gabrielle Clark recorded her program-record tying 105th career doubles win, helping lead the second-ranked Eagles to an 8-1 win over eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University and the 2014 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in Altamonte Springs, Florida on Sunday morning.

The UAA Championship was the Eagles' 25th in 27 years of conference competition, and the team's second-straight.

The Eagles improved to 23-2 overall in 2014, and are just one win shy of matching the program record for wins in a season.  The victory was the team's ninth in as many tries against a ranked Division III opponent this season, and its 11th-consecutive victory overall.

Clark teamed with freshman Michelle Satterfield to win the first doubles match, 8-5 over Carnegie's Bryn Raschke and Vanessa Pavia.  The win ties her with former Eagle Zahra Dawson (2008-12) for the most doubles victories in school history.  Clark also won her first singles match, 6-2, 6-1, over Angela Pratt, and is now one win shy of becoming just the second Eagle to reach the 100-win mark in singles play.

Emory went on to sweep the three doubles matches, with a 9-7 at second doubles from junior Rebecca Siegler and sophomore Beatrice Rosen over Nicholle Torres and Angela Pratt, and an 8-2 win from senior Brenna Kelly and freshman Katarina Su at third doubles over Brooke Tsu and Katie Cecil.

In singles action, Satterfield claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win in the second match over Pavia, while sophomore Madison Gordon won 6-4, 6-3 over Torres at fourth singles.  Su earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Tsu at fifth singles, extending her winning to 22-straight matches and improving to 23-1 for the campaign.

Emory's lone loss on the day came at third singles, where freshman Melissa Goodman dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Cecil.

Carnegie Mellon, which was seeded second behind Emory entering the tournament, dropped to 17-4 on the year with the loss.
