Tartans Pick Up 5-2 Win Over St. Francis

The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked seventh nationally in Division III, hosted Division I St. Francis University on Friday, February 13, defeating the Red Flash 5-2 at Greensburg Racket Club. The Tartans are now 5-1 while the Red Flash fall to 2-4.

Playing singles first due to time and courts available, the Tartans won four matches, securing the team victory. Sophomore Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) earned the first point with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Senior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) later gave the Tartans a 2-1 lead with a 7-6(7-3), 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.

Sophomore Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) and freshman Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) then won their respective No. 1 and No. 3 matches to put the Tartans ahead 4-1. Pavia won 7-6(7-0), 6-2, while Sidell won 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

The Tartans later swept doubles play, taking the point under Division I rules. Raschke and Sidell paired at No. 1 doubles to win 8-4 before Pavia and freshman Stacy Chang (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. The last match to finish was between senior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) and Torres against Alex Sachs and Danielle Gryckiewicz, with Pratt and Torres winning 8-7(7-1).
