Spartans Compete at Middlebury Invitational

The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team continued its fall season at the Middlebury Invitational on Friday and Saturday, October 3-4. The Spartans faced off against the United States Military Academy, host Middlebury College and Williams College (Mass.).

Freshman Nina Cepeda (Mason, Ohio/Mason) posted a combined record of 3-1. On Friday, Cepeda scored a straight-set victory over Army's Aly Hall, 6-2, 6-4.  Then, in doubles action, Cepeda teamed with fellow freshman Maya Hamaker (Edmond, Okla./New Braunfels) to defeat the Black Knights' Hall and Molly Prins, 8-6.

On Saturday versus Middlebury, the Spartans won five of nine matches, including all three in doubles competition. Cepeda partnered with junior Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) for a 8-2 win versus Shannon Gibbs and Katie Paradies. Senior Marianne Bonanno (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) and junior Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) earned an 8-5 victory over Jennifer Sundstrom and Kaysee Orozco. To complete the doubles sweep of the Panthers, junior Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) teamed with freshman Nithya Kanagasegar (Crossville, Tenn./Cumberland County) for an 8-3 triumph versus Lily Bondy and Alexandra Fields. Kanagasegar and Djohan also registered singles victories for the Spartans against Middlebury. Last season, the Panthers were ranked 10th in the nation entering the NCAA Championship Tournament.

The Spartanse to were unable to grab a match against Williams. The Ephs finished third in the country last spring.
