No. 23 Spartans Sweep Singles in 8-1 Win at No. 32 Oberlin

The No. 23 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team swept singles action in an 8-1 victory at No. 32 Oberlin College during a Saturday morning matchup inside the Heisman Field House.

The Spartans improve to 4-1 with their second win in a row. The team's only loss this season came to a Division I opponent.

The Yeowomen drop to 0-4.

The Spartans won two out of three doubles matches before claiming all six singles points. At No. 2 doubles, junior Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) and senior Marianne Bonanno (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) defeated their opponents 8-4. At No. 3, junior Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) and sophomore Sarah Berchuck (Dallas, Texas/Baylor School & Suffield Academy) won by the exact same score.

Five of the six singles victories came in straight sets.  At No. 2, Bonanno won 6-3, 7-5, and at No. 4, Khadilkar outscored her opponent 7-5, 6-1.  

Junior Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) won at No. 3 (7-5, 6-1), sophomore Kennedy Mulholland (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Beachwood) added another win at No. 5 (6-4,6-4) and freshman Nina Cepeda (Mason, Ohio/Mason) outscored her opponent at No. 6 (6-4, 7-5). Freshman Nithya Kanagasegar (Crossville, Tenn./Cumberland County) won 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 at No. 1 singles with a 10-2 score in the tie-breaker.
