From Emory University Athletics
The Emory University women's tennis team opened its
2014-15 on a strong note, recording a number of impressive
performances on the opening day of play at the USTA/ITA South
Regional Championships.
The Emory singles corps turned in dominant play, with eight
competitors advancing into the Round of 16 while registering an
overall record of 15-1. Sophomore Michelle
Satterfield and junior Bea Rosen,
seeded Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, each drew first-round byes and
advanced to Saturday's action after earning second-round
triumphs. Satterfield bested Connor Thomas of Sewanee, 6-0,
6-1, while Rosen breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 verdict over Mary Massey of
Rhodes College. Next up for Satterfield is a test against
Natalia Lopez of North Carolina Wesleyan while Rosen will tackle
Taylor Childress of Sewanee. Sophomore Katarina
Su, the No. 5 seed, came away with two Friday triumphs,
topping Agnes Scott's Claire Rinaldo, 6-2, 6-0, before rolling to a
6-1, 6-2, outcome over Isabella Graf of Methodist University.
Su, the owner of a 28-match singles winning streak, will confront
Ashley Ford of Millsaps in the Round of 16. Other Eagles
notching a pair of wins included freshmen Julie
Fowler, the No. 6 seed, and Anna Fuhr, the
No. 7 seed, junior Marissa Levine,
freshman Bridget Harding (No. 8 seed) and
junior Catharine Harris.
The Eagles were perfect throughout doubles, with each of
their five teams reaching the quarterfinals. The top-seeded
pairing of Satterfield and Harding advanced to the quarterfinals
with an 8-1 win over Berry College's Lauren Byrket and Mary Cerny
after a first-round bye, while the second-seeded duo of Su and
Fuhr raced to an 8-0 triumph over Agnes Scott's Taylor Lee and
Camille Wilson in the second round. Fuhr and Su
will battle teammates Danielle Truitt and
Marissa Levine in the quarters with the latter pair nailing down
verdicts over teams from Oglethorpe and Methodist. Other
Emory tandems emerging with two wins on Friday included
sophomore Michelle DeMeo and Rosen along
with Fowler and junior Stephanie
Loutsenko.
