The top-ranked Emory University Women's Tennis team kicked off play at the Fab 5 Tournament in Lexington, Virginia on Friday afternoon with a 7-2 win over host and 10th-ranked Washington and Lee University.
The win was the fifth-straight for the Eagles, who improved to 10-2 overall in 2015. Washington and Lee dropped to 11-4 with the loss.
Emory took the lead in the match after doubles play, claiming victories in two of the three matches. At second doubles, junior Beatrice Rosen and sophomore Melissa Goodman won their fifth-straight match, claiming an 8-6 win over Brooke Donnelly and Meghan Buell. The Eagles picked up a point at third doubles, where sophomore Katarina Su and freshman Bridget Harding defeated Kelsey Vella and Michelle Fleenor, 8-2. The Eagles' lone doubles setback came at first doubles, with freshman Anna Fuhr and sophomore Michelle Satterfield falling to Sonja Meighan and Patricia Kirkland, 8-3.
Emory went on to secure the match victory with wins in five of the six singles contests. Rosen won at first singles, 6-7 (7), 7-5, 7-5 over Meighan, while Su claimed a straight-set win at third singles, 6-2, 6-1. Goodman needed three sets to defeat Kirkland at fourth singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, while the final two Emory victories were each in straight sets, with Harding earning a 6-3, 6-0 win over Mary Elizabeth Shutley at fifth singles, and junior Madison Gordon defeating Allison Hupalo 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles.
Satterfield suffered the only singles loss for Emory, falling in three sets to Donnelly, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow at the Fab 5 Tournament, taking on third-ranked Williams College at 2:00 pm in Lexington, Virginia.
