The University of Chicago women's tennis team kicked off its season by competing in singles and doubles at day one of the Chicago State University Invitational on Friday.
UChicago is one of six teams participating in the weekend tournament. The other five teams include NCAA Division I opponents Chicago State University, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Bradley University, Northern Illinois University and NCAA Division II Lewis University.
The Maroons excelled in singles play on the day, compiling an 8-2 record overall. Sophomore Tiffany Chen and senior Kelsey McGillis won both of their matches in three sets. The other six victories were in straight sets by senior Megan Tang, freshman Ariana Iranpour, junior Stephanie Lee, freshman Courtney Warren, senior Maggie Schumann and freshman Jasmine Lee.
Doubles play was tougher for UChicago as the team went 1-4. The combo of Tang and Iranpour dispatched their opponents from Wisconsin-Green Bay by an 8-1 margin.
"We had a really solid showing today and I was very happy with our attitude, fight and team spirit," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "We weren't quite where we want to be with doubles but that's expected with only three days of practice. However, we really shined in singles, going 8-2 against tough Division I competition. It was also great that the first-years all picked up a win and really looked like they belonged. Tomorrow should be another great day and we are looking forward to competing."
