Strong starts in singles and doubles boosted the University of Chicago women's tennis team at the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships on Friday.

The Maroons went 15-3 in singles and 8-2 in doubles play on the day. Five individuals and two doubles tandems advanced in the bracket. Senior Megan Tang entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and is the two-time defending singles champion. Tang and freshman teammate Ariana Iranpour are also the No. 2 seed in the doubles draw.

Tang, Iranpour, sophomore Tiffany Chen, junior Sruthi Ramaswami and freshman Jasmine Lee all won both of their matches in singles. Iranpour and Lee dominated their opponents, winning in straight sets without losing a game in the process. In doubles, Tang and Iranpour won two matches by identical 8-2 scores while Chen and freshman Courtney Warrenwere similarly victorious in their opening two bouts.

"Today was a great day for the team that saw some great individual efforts," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "Our first-years really acclimated themselves well and stepped up, picking up 10 wins between them. Combined with an outstanding effort from our returners, the team had a great day. We know things will get more challenging tomorrow, but I believe we are ready to step up and win some tough matches."
