Tartans Defeat Two Division II Opponents

The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked sixth in Division III, faced off with Divison II opponents California University of Pennsylvania and Slippery Rock University on Saturday, February 6. The Tartans started the day with a 6-2 victory against the 14th-ranked Vulcans, before topping The Rock 8-1.

Against the Vulcans, the Tartans held a 2-0 lead after doubles play, receiving victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Sophomores Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) and Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) played to a 9-7 victory in the second slot while senior Abbey Hamstra(Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) and junior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) won by the same score at third doubles.

Torres then defeated Jasi Witherspoon at third singles, 6-1, 6-1 to make the score 3-1. Freshman Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) was the next to finish, defeating Veronika Mikulis, 6-2, 6-4, at fourth singles before senior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) clinched the match at first singles, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

The Tartans posted a night cap victory against Slippery Rock after holding a 3-0 advantage following doubles play.

Tsu and Vizelman made quick work at No. 2 doubles winning 8-0 before Hamstra and Torres picked up an 8-3 victory at second doubles. Sidell and freshman Minami Makino (Whittier, Calif./Sunny Hills) then won 8-5 at first doubles to complete the sweep.

Vizelman picked up her second singles win of the day at fourth singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Amanda Bruscemi before Torres clinched the team win with a 6-2, 6-3 score at third singles against Tiffany Kollah.

Freshman Charlotte Deiss (Matthews, N.C./East Mecklenburg) won at sixth singles, 6-4, 6-1, ahead of Lai's victory at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-2. The last victory of the day came from Sidell at second singles when she won 6-3, 6-4 against Nina Barbano.
