No. 7 Tartans Top Grove City 9-0

The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked seventh nationally, entertained the Wolverines of Grove City College on Wednesday, March 16. The Tartans improve to 9-5 with a 9-0 win while Grove City is now 9-8.

Carnegie Mellon opened the match with three 8-0 victories in doubles play. The tandem of junior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) and freshman Charlotte Deiss (Matthews, N.C./East Mecklenburg) in the No.2 slot defeated Leah Thomsen and Janine Jones before sophomore Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) and freshman Minami Makino (Whittier, Calif. / Sunny Hills Whittier, Calif./Sunny Hills) downed Maggie Manchester and Karolina Lagerquist at No. 1. Rounding out doubles was the duo of senior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) and freshman Marina Selenica (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day School) who defeated Julie Becker and Taylor Bradley at No. 3.

The Tartans continued their sweep over the Wolverines in singles play with straight set victories in each match. Makino earned the Tartans first point in singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 over Thomsen. Selenica also posted a 6-0, 6-0 win, as she defeated Bradley at No. 4 singles. Tsu then won both of her sets 6-1 over Manchester at first singles to give Carnegie Mellon a 6-0 edge.

Deiss won 6-1, 6-0 over Melissa Karidis at No. 6. Freshman Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) blanked Lagerquist at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0 and senior Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
