Tartans Start Strong at First Day of ITA Regional

The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team started the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday, September 26 on the campus of University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. Five advanced to the round of 16 in singles play while three pairs reached the quarterfinals of doubles.

Senior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) won both her matches Saturday in straight sets by the scores of 6-3, 6-1.  Tsu started the day topping Mary Shutley of Washington & Lee before downing Taylor Diffley Mary Washington.

Junior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South), who is seeded sixth, on Saturday won twice by the identical scores of 6-0, 6-3.  Torres defeated Courtney Ahmed of Haverford and then Melissa Barall.

Two sophomores advanced to the round of 16 for the Tartans, Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) and Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School). Sidell topped Melinda Kauffman of Washington & Lee 6-0, 6-3 and then Hannah Jabusch of Mary Washington 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Lai started with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Christopher Newport's Katie Carlson before winning 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 over Caitlin Rummelsburg of Franklin & Marshall.

Freshman Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) knocked off fourth seeded Mckinney Harwood of Christopher Newport 6-7(4), 7-6(6), 6-2 and then defeated Mackenzie Smith Mary Washington in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles play, Tsu and Vizelman won 8-3 over Julie Lazer and Rachelle Martinez of Washington College.  Torres and freshman Minami Makino (Whittier, Calif./Sunny Hills Whittier, Calif./Sunny Hills) toped the fifth seeded duo of Claudia Lohn and Natalie Savage from Salisbury, 8-6.  The third Tartan tandem to advance was the team of Lai and freshman Marina Selenica (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day School) who won 8-2 over Smith and Danielle Mirabella of Mary Washington.
