No. 11 Tartans Earn 8-1 Win at No. 12 Johns Hopkins

The 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team traveled to regional rival Johns Hopkins University for a Saturday match. The Tartans defeated the 12th-ranked Blue Jays 8-1 after the match was moved indoors due to weather.

The first point of the day for the Tartans (13-5) came at number two doubles by way of senior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) and freshman Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield). The pair won 8-4 against Megumi Chen and Kimberly Zhou. Sophomore Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) and freshman Minami Makino (Whittier, Calif./Sunny Hills), ranked sixth in the region, then won 9-7 against the fifth-ranked pair in the region, Ashnaa Rao and Mikey Barthelmass. Third doubles then made it a sweep when senior Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) and junior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) won 9-8 (7-2).

While playing on three courts, Sidell was the first to finish singles play when she defeated Jody Law, 6-1, 6-2, at third singles. Match point came from Torres at second singles, as she topped Chen, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

Other wins for the Tartans came from Tsu, freshman Marina Selenica (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day School) and Makino. Tsu picked up a three-set win at first singles against the second best player in the region, Rao. Tsu, ranked seventh, won 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Selencia made the score 7-1 with a 6-0, 6-4 win at sixth singles before Makino won 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) at fifth singles.
