Tartans Open Season With Two 9-0 Victories

The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opend up dual play with a pair of 9-0 victories on Friday, September 18.  The Tartans split their squad with half traveling north to Grove City College and the other hosting Division II Seton Hill University.

Against Seton Hill the Tartans earned two points by way or forfeit, one in each doubles and singles play.  At first doubles junior Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) and sophomore Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) won 8-3 before senior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) and freshman Marina Selenica (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day School) won 8-5.

In singles play, junior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) won at first singles, Tsu won at second followed by Sidell in the third spot.  Senior Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) and Selenica won at four and five singles.

The Tartans against Grove City won first and third doubles by the score of 8-0. Playing in the first spot was the freshmen tandem of Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) and Minami Makino (Whittier, Calif. / Sunny Hills Whittier, Calif./Sunny Hills) while junior Margaret Anne Smith(Singapore/Singapore American School) and sophomore Kalyani Narayan (Saratoga, Calif.) played at third.

All six points in singles play came by straight set victories including three 6-0, 6-0 wins for the Tartans.  Sophomore Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) picked up one of them at third singles with Smith and freshman Charlotte Deiss (Matthews, N.C./East Mecklenburg) claiming the other two at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
