Three Spartans Singles Players & Two Doubles Teams Still Alive in Main ITA Draw

After one day of competition at the USTA/ITA Fall Central Region Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan, sophomore Nithya Kanagasegar, freshman Jessica Liu and senior Taylor Sweeney each advanced to the round of 32 of the main singles draw, while Kanagasegar and senior Sara Zargham and Sweeney and sophomore Nina Cepeda each advanced to the round of 16 of the doubles draw.

Kanagasegar and Zargham, the draw's top-seeded duo, advanced with a pair of wins, defeating Taylor LaBarge and Amanda Susnak of Hope College 8-0, followed by an 8-5 win over Kelsey Forkin and Claire O'Connor of North Central College.  The pairing will take on Maddie Lee and Alyssa Seneviratne of DePauw in the round of 16 on Saturday.

Also advancing in the main doubles draw was the Spartans' 14th-seeded team of Cepeda and senior Sweeney, who picked up an 8-0 win over Wooster's Kaitlyn Harrison and Bonnie Salmeron, followed by an 8-3 victory against Chicago's Katarina Stevanovich and Adrienne Travis.  Cepeda and Sweeney will take on Lake Forest's Grace Dowling and Christi Valicenti on Saturday.

In other doubles action, the CWRU pairings of Liu and junior Jennifer Lowe and senior Kaitlin Mills and sophomore Peyton Young each lost 8-4 to seeded opponents in the first round of the main draw, but bounced back to win their first matches in the consolation draw.

In the main singles draw, all three of the Spartans seeded representatives moved on to the round of 32 after receiving first-round byes.  Kanagasegar, the fifth-seed, defeated Emma Brezel of Oberlin 6-1, 6-2.  14th-seeded Liu earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ava Kolman of Elmhurst, while 17th-seeded Sweeney bested Kathryn Ryan of Illinois College.

Zargham added a win in the first round, 6-1, 6-1 over Ohio Wesleyan's Meryl Reams.

In the 'B' draw, Lowe won both of her matches on Friday to advance to the round of 16, while Mills won her first match before falling in the round of 32.
