The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Oberlin Invitational in Oberlin, Ohio on Sunday, going 7-3 in its final matches of the weekend.

The Spartans finished the final day with a 2-1 record in doubles matches, and a 5-2 mark in singles play.  Overall for the three-day tournament, CWRU players combined to go 13-9 in singles play and 4-6 in doubles action.

"We played a solid tournament under difficult weather conditions in Oberlin," said Head Coach Kirsten Gambrell.  "Our singles play was particularly strong, with our fitness helping us to get through a lot of long matches."

Doubles winners for the Spartans on Sunday included sophomore Nithya Kanagasegar and freshman Jessica Liu, 8-5 over Sarah Hughes and Mayada Audeh of Oberlin, and sophomore Nina Cepeda and senior Taylor Sweeney, 8-5 over Lauren O'Malley and Madisyn Rini of John Carroll University.

In singles play, Cepeda claimed wins in a pair of matches, besting Oberlin's Jackie McDermott 6-3, 6-0 and Baldwin-Wallace University's Kelsey Blatt 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6.  Sophomore Peyton Young (6-2, 6-4 over Oberlin's Ariana Abayomi), Sweeney (6-4, 6-3 over Oberlin's Emma Brezel) and Liu (6-4, 6-2 over Oberlin's Audeh) each added wins as well during the day.

With the opening tournament of the year now complete, Case Western Reserve will now begin preparations for the ITA Fall Central Regional Championships, to be held in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

"We will need to execute on big points more consistently against the high level of competition we will face at regionals," said Gambrell.  "Our goal is to continue to get better each day at practice so that we are at our best for Kalamazoo in a few weeks."
