Emory Advances to NCAA Third Round with 5-0 Win Over Methodist

The top-ranked Emory University women's tennis team opened play at the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday blanking Methodist University, 5-0, in the second round, hosted by Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA.

The Eagles (24-5) now await the winner of the Washington & Lee-Westminster (PA) match which will be played later in the afternoon on Saturday. Emory faces the victor in the third round on Sunday beginning at noon EST, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals on Monday, May 23rd in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Emory jumped out to a quick start on Saturday, winning all three doubles matches in just over an hour. At third doubles, junior Michelle Satterfield and Paula Castro shut out their counterparts 8-0 with junior Katarina Su and sophomore Bridget Harding collecting the 8-1 victory in the second doubles contest. Sophomore Anna Fuhr and senior Madison Gordon teamed up for just the second time this winning, closing out the doubles portion of the match with an 8-3 triumph on the no.1 doubles court.

Needing just two singles victories to clinch the match, senior Beatrice Rosen made quick work of Methodist's Sam Munze with a 6-0, 6-1 successful decision at second singles and Su wrapped up the win for the Eagles with a 6-3, 6-0 straight set victory for the no.4 singles point.

At the conclusion of the match, Emory was ahead in the second match of the four remaining singles matches. Satterfield at first singles (6-1, 5-0), Gordon at third singles (6-1, 4-0), freshman Daniela Lopez at fifth singles (6-3, 3-1) and junior Melissa Goodman at sixth singles (6-1, 5-0).

Notes

Eagles improve to 74-33 all-time in the NCAA Tournament including a 57-11 mark under Head Coach Amy Bryant…The 24 victories this season are the second most all-time in single season in Emory history, tying the 2003 and 2004 squads that both finished the season 24-1.
