Top-Ranked Eagles Blank Rochester 9-0 in UAA Opening Round

The top-ranked and top-seeded Emory University women's tennis team opened up the 2016 University Athletic Association tournament blanking eighth-seeded University of Rochester 9-0 on Friday morning at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

The Eagles (21-4) now move on to the UAA Semifinals on Saturday and will face fourth-seeded and nationally- ranked no.-16 University of Chicago (10-4). The Maroons narrowly edged out fifth-seeded Case Western Reserve 5-4 in the quarterfinals.

Emory opened the match sweeping doubles action in less than an hour. Senior Madison Gordon and freshman Taylor Cosme teamed up for the first time this season to win the no.2 doubles point for the Eagles 8-1. Junior Melissa Goodman and senior Stephanie Loutsenko also made a first time pairing as the duo followed with an 8-1 victory in the no.2 doubles match to give Emory a 2-0 lead. The Eagles' top doubles team, sophomore Anna Fuhr and freshman Daniela Lopez, closed out the doubles portion of the match, taking the no.1 doubles point 8-2.

Sophomore Bridget Harding extended Emory's lead to 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory for the no.1 singles point. Goodman made it 5-0, not dropping a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win on the no.5 singles line. Cosme and Gordon both earned victories to increase the lead to 7-0 as Cosme picked up a 6-0, 6-0 triumph on the no.2 singles court and Gordon extended her singles match winning streak to 16 with a 6-0, 6-1 decision for the no.3 singles point. Lopez and senior Marissa Levine closed out the match for the Eagles as Lopez won the no.4 singles point 6-2, 6-0 and Levine winning the no.6 singles match 6-1, 6-1.
