The New York University women's tennis team completed its second day of play at the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Championships on Sunday, September 27, in Geneva, NY.

In singles play, three Violets remain in the singles draw as senior Carmen Lai and freshmen Flyora Shiyanova and Alice McGinty each won their Round of 16 match-ups to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Shiyanova dropped a close 6-4, 6-3 match, while Lai won  6-2, 6-2 over Skidmore College's Brianna Greene, and McGinty defeated SUNY Geneseo's Cat Crummey 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The two Violets will compete in the semifinals tomorrow.

"Carmen has maintained her high level of play throughout this tournament. I like her chances tomorrow," said NYU Head Coach Horace Choy. "Alice is our three-set stalwart. She comes back strong after losing sets. I like her fighting spirit."

In doubles play, McGinty and freshman Vanessa Scott defeated Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute's Melanie Frank and Emily Laurilliard 8-4 in the quartefinals, but lost in the semifinals to Cat Crummey and Marylen Santos of SUNY Geneseo 8-6 in the semifinals.
