The New York University women's tennis team opened its 2016 spring season with a 6-3 win over Swarthmore College on Saturday, February 27, in Swarthmore, PA.

The Violets won all three doubles matches and split the six singles match-ups to account for the final margin.

"I thought we showed some nerves early on, but then we settled in and took control," said NYU Head Coach Horace Choy.

It was a strong opening day for a trio of NYU players who won boith their singles and doubles matches.

Carmen Lai won both her #1 singles (6-0, 6-0) and #1 doubles matches (8-4). Flyora Shiyanova paired with Lai in doubles, then won her #2 singles match 6-1, 6-2. NYU's third multi-winner was Vanessa Scott, who was victorious at #2 doubles 8-5 (with Laila El Dessouki) and at #3 singles (6-1, 6-1).

"Our top three really took the drama out of the match by dominating their singles matches," Choy explained. "They played real well and got us off to a great start."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Madeline King and Nicole Schnabel combined for a 9-7 win at #3 doubles. King also fell in a three-set tiebreaker (6-3, 4-6, 11-9) at # 4 singles.

- Jazmin Colling rallied to force a tiebreaker at #6 singles, but fell 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.
