Maroons Knock Off Carnegie Mellon 6-3 in UAA Third-Place Match

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago women's tennis team wrapped up the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship weekend by defeating Carnegie Mellon University 6-3 in the third-place match on Sunday.

The No. 16-ranked Maroons (11-5 record) defeated their eighth nationally-ranked opponent of the season. The No. 9-ranked Tartans fell to 15-7.

UChicago entered the eight-team tournament field as the No. 4 seed while CMU was the No. 2 seed. The doubles portion of the contest jumpstarted the Maroons to an immediate 3-0 advantage. The doubles pairings all won by matching 8-6 scores.

With the commanding lead in hand, UChicago needed only two wins out of the six singles matches to clinch. Sophomore Ariana Iranpour was done quickly at No. 1 singles with an efficient 6-0, 6-2 victory to bring the magic number to one. Freshman Rachel Kim provided the clincher minutes later 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. Junior Tiffany Chen tallied the final singles win at No. 5 in three sets – 1-6, 7-5, 10-6.

Kim, Iranpour and Chen all had wins in both singles and doubles on the day.
