Tartans Win Twice in Home Matches

The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team hosted two dual matches on Saturday, October 8, defeating Oberlin College indoors, 8-1, and Christopher Newport University outside, 9-0.

The first match of the day for the Tartans was against Oberlin at The Club for Sport and Health in Monroeville, Pa., due to inclement weather. The home team took a 3-0 lead after doubles scores of 8-4, 8-2 and 8-6.

In singles play, freshman Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) won 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth position before junior Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) sealed the match victory at second singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

As the weather cleared and the courts dried, the Tartans faced Christopher Newport outside on their campus courts. The Tartans also took a 3-0 lead after doubles against the Captains. Sidell and senior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) won 8-6 at first doubles, sophomores Minama Makino (Whittier, Calif./Sunny Hills) and Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) won 8-4 at second doubles and Rao and freshman Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) won 8-2 at third doubles.

Sophomore Marina Selenica (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day School) was first to finish singles play as she won 6-4, 6-0 at sixth singles. Vizelman then won 6-1, 6-2 at third singles to help claim the team victory.
