Charlotte Deiss Leads Tartans at Carnegie Mellon Invitational

The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team began the 2015-16 campaign with a home invitational against Division I Duquesne University on Saturday, September 10.

Sophomore Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) and freshman Karena Zhang (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) defeated sophomore Tyra Abdalla and freshman Lindsey Miller, 6-1, in the team's lone doubles win.

In singles play, sophomore Charlotte Deiss (Matthews, N.C./East Mecklenburg) went 3-0 with wins against sophomore Taylor Levinson (8-1), junior Koralie Etienne (8-6) and Abdalla (8-4).

Freshman Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) picked up her first collegiate victory with an 8-4 score against freshman Aishwarya Kona. Vizelman also earned a singles victory when she topped freshman Laurel Shymansky, 8-6. Senior Margaret Anne Smith (Singapore/Singapore American School) earned an 8-5 victory against Etienne.

Zhang won her first collegiate singles match by an 8-2 score against Abdalla while fellow freshman Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) also won her first collegiate match on the day with a 6-1 showing against Kona. Junior Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) was also victorious for the afternoon with an 8-0 win against Levinson.
