Tartans Open 2017 NCAA Championship With 5-0 Win Against Messiah

The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 10th in the nation, opened the 2017 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship with a 5-0 win against Messiah College in the first round Friday, May 12. Williams College is hosting the first, second and third rounds on the Torrance M. Hunt Courts in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

The Tartans, now 18-7, swept through doubles with 8-0 scores at all three positions. The second doubles freshmen pair of Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) won first while sophomore Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) and junior Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) won second at third doubles with senior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) and junior Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) winning third at first doubles.

Rao was the first to finish singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles against Meagan Scala. Sophomore Marina Selenica (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day School) then won at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-1, for the fifth and final point of the match which was played to decision.

Both Sidell and Vizelman led their respective second and third singles matches by 6-0, 5-0 scores.
