Two Spartans Advance to Round of 32 at ITA Regionals

Case Western Reserve University junior Peyton Young and freshman Kendal Holladay each won a pair of singles matches during the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Central Regional Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan to reach the round of 32 of the draw.

Holladay, seeded ninth in the draw topped Denison's Lucy Deal 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 128, and then picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Eleanor Rich of Oberlin in the round of 64. She will face Hope's Claire Hallock in the round of 32 at noon on Saturday.

Young added a pair of wins, claiming a 1-6, 7-5, 10-5 win over Laura Gutierrez in the round of 128, and then upsetting 25th-seeded Dana Goggin of Augustana in the round of 64, 7-6 (4), 6-1. She will face Allison Bush of DePauw in the round of 32 at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Winning first round matches for the Spartans in singles play, but falling in the second round, were junior Nina Cepeda and sophomore Jessica Liu.

In doubles play, Cepeda and Young claimed an 8-2 victory over Oberlin's Olivia Hay and Rainie Heck, and will take on Kaylan Griffin and Rebbeca Ho of Washington (Mo.) in the round of 32. Freshman Lauren Beier and senior Kennedy Mulholland added an 8-6 win over Millikin's Morgan Bettner and Kelly Ruane in the first round. Three-seeded Holladay and Liu followed with a 9-8 (0) win over St. Mary's Monica Davy and Samantha Setterblad, and will take on Mindy Borovsky and Sofia Burnett of Washington (Mo.) in the round of 32. Freshman Katrin Gurvich and senior Jennifer Lowe claimed an 8-1 win over Lake Forest's Silvia Kulbokas and Allison Watts in the first round.
