CWRU Improves to 8-2 With Win Over John Carroll

The 19th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team cruised to its eighth win of the season, defeating John Carroll University 8-1 at the Cleveland Skating Club on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans improved to 8-2 on the year with the win, while John Carroll dropped to 4-8. CWRU has now won four-straight dual matches and eight of its last nine matches.

CWRU got off to a hot start in Saturday's match with a sweep of the three doubles contests. The closest match of the three was at first doubles, where the Spartans' duo of juniors Nithya Kanagasegar and Peyton Young defeated Lauren O'Malley and Madisyn Rini 8-6. Case Western Reserve claimed an 8-2 victory at second doubles, with junior Nina Cepeda and freshman Katrin Gurvich defeating JCU's Nicolette Bourlas and Andreja Didovic, and also an 8-4 win at third doubles, with freshmen Kendal Holladay and Katie Busch picking up a win over Jennifer Stroyne and Carlye Campagna.

Holladay defeated Rini at second singles in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5. The Spartans next two wins came in straight sets at third and fourth singles. Cepeda picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bourlas at third singles, and Young claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Katherine Devine in the fourth match. Rounding out the slate of victories for the Spartans were Gurvich over Stroyne, 5-7, 6-4, 10-1 at fifth singles, and senior Kennedy Mulholland, 6-2, 2-6, 10-5 over Molly Traverso in the sixth singles match. Kanagasegar took the lone loss of the day for the Spartans, losing to O'Malley in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
