From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The 19th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team picked up two wins on Sunday to improve to 10-2 on the season. The Spartans topped 27th-ranked Lewis & Clark College 5-4 and 31st-ranked Kenyon College 5-4 in Gambier, Ohio at the Jasper Tennis Center.
With the wins, the Spartans extended their win streak to a season-high six matches.
Lewis & Clark grabbed the early lead in the match, with Natasha Hood and Wiktoria Plawska picking up an 8-6 victory over junior Nina Cepeda and freshman Katrin Gurvich at second doubles, followed by an 8-4 victory at third doubles for Christine Eliazo and Natalie Kelly over freshman Kendal Holladay and Jessica Liu. At first doubles, juniors Nithya Kanagasegar and Peyton Young were able to pick up a key point for the Spartans, winning 8-6 over Josie Legarza and Kacey Incerpi to make it a 2-1 score heading into singles play.
The Spartans went on to win four of the six singles matches. Holladay earned a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Legarza at second singles, with Cepeda claiming a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Eliazo at third singles. In the fourth singles match, Young picked up a victory over Incerpi, 7-5, 6-4, and Gurvich defeated Kelly 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in the fifth singles contest.
CWRU's two losses came at first singles, where Plawska bested Kanagasegar 6-2, 6-1, and at sixth singles, where freshman Katie Busch fell to Chloe Sermet, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Lewis & Clark fell to 7-3 on the year with the loss.
In the second match of the day against Kenyon, the Spartans got off to a quick start by sweeping the three doubles matches. At first doubles, Kanagasegar and Young defeated Mara Kaspers and Maggie Sweeney 8-3, while Cepeda and Gurvich claimed an 8-6 victory over Diana Aboubakare and Jenna Murray in the second doubles match. Holladay and Liu rounded out the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win in the third doubles contest over Alyssa Moreau and Annie Reiner.
In singles action, the Spartans dropped the first three singles matches, allowing the Ladies to come back and tie the match at 3-3. Holladay bested Sweeney at second singles 6-3,3-6, 7-5 to push CWRU back on top at 4-3. Young then earned the straight-set win, 6-4, 7-5, over Reiner in fourth singles to secure the victory for the Spartans.
Kenyon dropped to 4-4 with Sunday's loss to the Spartans.
