Spartans Earn 6-3 Win Over #37 Oberlin on ‘Senior Night’

The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team claimed a 6-3 win over 37th-ranked Oberlin College at the Cleveland Skating Club on Friday night.

Prior to the start of the match, the women's tennis team recognized its two senior members – Jennifer Lowe and Kennedy Mulholland- for their dedication to the program.

The win was the Spartans' fifth this season over a nationally-ranked opponent, as the team improved to 11-2 overall on the season. Oberlin dropped to 8-9 on the year with the loss.

Oberlin grabbed the early lead in the match, with Sarah Hughes and Emma Brezel picking up an 8-6 win over junior Nithya Kanagasegar and sophomore Jessica Liu at first doubles, followed by an 8-4 victory at third doubles for Mayada Audeh and Jackie McDermott over junior Nina Cepeda and Mulholland. At second doubles, junior Peyton Young and freshman Kendal Holladay were able to pick up a key point for the Spartans, winning 8-6 over Olivia Hay and Delaney Black to make it a 2-1 score heading into singles play.

CWRU went on to win five of the six singles matches. Kanagasegar earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Hughes at first singles, with Holladay claiming a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Brezel at second singles.  In the third singles match, Cepeda picked up a victory over Audeh, 6-1, 6-0, and Young defeated Black 6-4, 6-3 in the fourth singles contest. Freshman Katrin Gurvich bested McDermott at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-2 to secure the Spartans victory.

The Spartans one loss came at sixth singles, where freshman Katie Busch fell to Lena Rich, 6-4, 6-1.
