CWRU Sweeps on Second Day of Spring Break Trip

The 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team picked up two wins on their second day of matches during their Spring Break trip in Florida. The Spartans topped the 39th-ranked University of Texas at Tyler 6-3 and Colby-Sawyer College 9-0 in Orlando at the USTA Tennis Center on Tuesday.

With the wins, the Spartans improve to 6-2 overall on the season.

Case Western Reserve claimed wins in two of the three doubles matches in its early match against Texas-Tyler, ranked 39th in Division III, to take a 2-1 lead over the Patriots. Claiming wins for the Spartans were the no. 1 doubles pairing of junior Nithya Kanagasegar and sophomore Jessica Liu, 8-1 over Alexis Arrieta and Tori Musngi, and the no. 2 doubles duo of junior Peyton Young and freshman Kendal Holladay, 9-8 (7-4) over Lauren Kuhn and Nancy Perez. CWRU's lone doubles setback in the match came in the third match, with junior Nina Cepeda and freshman Katie Busch falling 8-5 to Alexandra McKissick and Savannah Seely.

Texas-Tyler evened the team score after Musngi defeated Liu by retirement at second singles. The Spartans first two singles wins came from first and third singles. At first singles, Kanagasegar regained the team's lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Arrieta, and Holladay put the Spartans a win away from clinching the match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at third singles. The Patriots then added a point at sixth singles when Seely picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Busch.

Shortly thereafter, Young secured the victory for the Spartans with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over McKissick at fifth singles. CWRU added a point to the team score when Cepeda claimed a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Perez at fourth singles.

Texas-Tyler fell to 6-5 on the year with the loss.

In the second match of the day against Colby-Sawyer, the Spartans got off to a quick start by sweeping the three doubles matches. At first doubles, Kanagasegar and Young defeated Ashley Woodside and Michelle Lopes 8-1, while Holladay and Cepeda claimed an 8-3 victory over Evelyn Miller and Aislinn O'Connor in the second doubles match. Senior Kennedy Mulholland and freshman Katrin Gurvich rounded out the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win in the third doubles contest over Lauren Blanchard and Christine Hill.

In singles action, Kanagasegar bested Woodside at first singles 6-0, 6-4 and Holladay claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Miller at second singles. Also claiming singles wins for the Spartans were Cepeda at third singles 6-1, 6-0 over O'Connor, Young at fourth singles 6-1, 6-1 over Blanchard, Gurvich at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-0 over Hill, and Busch at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-2 over Ari Sullivan.

Colby-Sawyer dropped to 12-2 with Tuesday's loss to the Spartans.
