Spartans Improve to 15-3 With Win Over Division II Walsh

The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team, currently ranked 19thin Division III, opened the week with a 7-2 win over Division II opponent Walsh University at the Carlton Courts on Wednesday afternoon.

The Spartans improved to 15-3 on the season with the win, while Walsh dropped to 6-15 for the campaign. CWRU has now won three-straight dual matches and 11 of its last 12 matches.

Case Western Reserve swept the three doubles matches on Wednesday, as junior Nithya Kanagasegar and sophomore Jessica Liu topped Sofya Logunova and Mercedes Fernanez 8-5 at first doubles, junior Peyton Young and freshman Kendal Holladay bested Victoria Ambrosio and Gabriela Laguna-Leon 8-2 at second doubles, and junior Nina Cepeda and freshman Katrin Gurvich earned an 8-6 win over Daria Bondareva and Snezhana Kiseleva at third doubles.

The Spartans went on to win four of the six singles matches. Liu earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Bondareva at third singles, with Gurvich claiming a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ambrosio at fourth singles. In the fifth singles match, freshman Katie Busch picked up a victory over Laguna-Leon, 6-2, 6-3, and senior Kennedy Mulholland defeated Kiseleva 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth singles contest.

CWRU's two losses came at first singles, where Logunova bested Kanagasegar 6-2, 6-2, and at second singles, where Holladay fell to Fernanez 5-7, 6-1, 11-9.
