Emory to Host USTA/ITA Fall South Regional Championships

From Emory University Athletics

The Emory University Women's Tennis program continues its fall season this weekend as the team hosts the USTA/ITA Fall South Regional Championships. Matches across the three day period will be played on the Woodruff PE Center and SAAC courts as well as at Agnes Scott College.

Fans hoping to follow the action this weekend can track the results of all three (A, B, C) singles and doubles draws here: http://tennislink.usta.com/Tournaments/TournamentHome/Tournament.aspx?T=194587#&&s=0. Results will be posted on the site periodically as they are reported to the USTA and ITA.

Emory will try to extend its reign at the South Regional as an Eagle has taken home the singles crown in each of the last 14 seasons. The singles and doubles champions from this weekend's tournament will advance to next month's ITA Small College National Tournament from October 13-16 in Surprise, Arizona.

Nine players will represent the Blue and the Gold in the main singles draw with the Eagles claiming the top five seeds in the draw. Last year's singles runner-up, junior Bridget Harding, enters the tournament as the no.-1 overall seed. She is followed by senior Michelle Satterfield (no.-2 seed), senior Katarina Su (no.-3 seed), sophomore Daniela Lopez (no.-4 seed) and senior Paula Castro (no.-5 seed). Rounding out the Eagles in the main singles draw will be seniors Michelle DeMeo and Melissa Goodman and freshman Elaine Vernoff and Emma Perelman.

In the main doubles draw, Emory will see four doubles pairs in action with two duos entering the field as the top two overall seeds. Last year's ITA Fall South Regional champions, Harding and Su, are slotted as the draw's no.-1 overall seed with Lopez and Satterfield earning the draw's no.-2 seed. Also competing in the doubles competition for Emory will be Goodman/Vernoff and DeMeo/Perelman.

Other schools scheduled to participate in the Regional Championship will be Belhaven, Birmingham-Southern, Oglethorpe, Centre, LaGrange, Agnes Scott, Covenant, Methodist, Berry, Sewanee, Piedmont, Millsaps and Rhodes.
