No. 1 Eagles Open ITA National Indoor Championships With Win Over Mary Washington

The No.-1 ranked Emory University Women's Tennis team opened the ITA National Indoor Championships with a quarterfinal-round victory over No.-15 Mary Washington, 9-0, on Friday night. The ITA National Indoor Championships is being held at the Adams Tennis Center on Sewanee University's campus in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Emory (2-1) advances to the semifinals to face fellow University Athletic Association member 11th-ranked Washington University at 3:15 PM CST on Saturday afternoon. The Bears topped 12th-ranked Carnegie Mellon 5-4 earlier on Friday afternoon.

"It's great to be competing against some quality DIII opponents," Head Coach Amy Bryant stated after the match. "We learned a lot in the opening round and are looking forward to tomorrow's match."

The Eagles' top-ranked doubles team of senior Katarina Su and junior Bridget Harding began the match with an 8-5 decision at first doubles. Senior Paula Castro and sophomore Daniela Lopez team up on the courts for the first time this season for an 8-6 victory at second doubles. Seniors Michelle Satterfield and Michelle DeMeo rounded out doubles action with an 8-4 win on court no.-3, their first win as a tandem on the year.

Harding extended Emory's lead to 4-0 at first singles, taking care of Mary Washington's Kait Brogan 6-1, 6-1. Satterfield followed with the decisive fifth point at second singles, stifling Taylor Diffley 6-1, 6-0. Su added a victory at fourth singles, blanking Rachel Summers 6-0, 6-0 with senior Melissa Goodman adding a 6-3, 6-3 win on court no.-4. Lopez rallied from a 6-5 second set deficit to win the third singles match over Caroline Mosberg 6-3, 7-6 (4). DeMeo then closed out the match, rallying from 5-2 down in the second set to knock off Danielle Mirabella 6-3, 7-5 at sixth singles.

Notes

With the victory, Head Coach Amy Bryant collected the 350th victory of her career. In her 18 seasons since taking over the helm of the program, Bryant has compiled an overall record of 350-85, good for a .805 winning percentage.
