The University of Chicago women's tennis team placed second in both singles and doubles to wrap up the four-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships on Monday.
The morning kicked off with the doubles final, as UChicago freshmen No. 9-seeds Marjorie Antohi and Estefania Navarro took on No. 1-seeds Rebecca Ho and Kaylan Griffith of Washington University-St. Louis. The Bears topped the Maroons 6-4, 6-3 to win the title.
Antohi matched up again with Ho a shortly afterwards, this time in the singles championship match. Antohi was the No. 9 seed while Ho was the No. 1 seed. In the first set, Ho earned an early break at 2-1, then another at 4-1. Antohi broke back at 4-2 and pulled to within 4-3. However, Ho held serve at the end to take the set 6-4. In the second set, Ho jumped ahead 2-0 and 4-2 before winning the match, 6-3.
"Despite coming up short in the finals today, I am very, very happy with the weekend," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "We really came a long way in only a few days. We are learning what it takes to compete at this level, how we need to close out games, sets and matches, and also what it means to be a good teammate. All of these things will really benefit us later this year and should motivate us to continue to improve over the offseason. We have an incredibly deep team this year and that will serve us well going forward."
