Yellowjackets Compete At ITA Northeast Regionals

The University of Rochester women's tennis team competed at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championship on Saturday afternoon at William Smith College.

In the main singles draw, sophomore Camila Garcia was the lone Yellowjacket winner in the opening round, defeating Rensselaer's Erica Frommmer 6-1 and 1-0 before Frommer was forced to retire.  The second round saw Garcia drop a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Flyora Shiyanova of NYU.

In other singles action, 8th seeded Sravya Gudipudi was upset in a tough three set match against Sarah Mensah of the College at Brockport.  Gudipudi won the opening set 6-3 before falling 6-2 and 10-6 in the final two sets. 

In addition, UR's Lauren Zickar dropped a 6-2, 6-0 opening round match to Danielle Giannetti of Skidmore while Allie Kallish of Rensselaer topped Rochester's Darby McCall 6-2, 6-1.

All three of the Yellowjacket who dropped a first round match proceeded to win their opening matches in the consolation bracket.  Zickar won 8-2 over Union's Paige Webster while McCall won 8-5 over Jean McCarthy from Nazareth.  Gudipudi won via walkover.

Rochester also had two entries in the doubles competition.  Garcia and Gudipudi lost to Jessica Ampel and Giannetti by and 8-4 score in the opening round while Zickar and Abbey Reinhart dropped a decision to Kate Christensen and Morgane Flournoy of Vassar 8-1.

In the doubles consolation, Garcia and Gudipudi were 8-2 winners over Tess Lubin and Mailani Neal of RPI while Mina Hsia and Natalia Pronchick of Union won 8-5 over Reinhart and Zickar.
