Rochester Ears Second Consecutive 8-1 Win in Puerto Rico

From University of Rochester Athletics

For the second straight day on its spring break trip in Puerto Rico, the University of Rochester picked up an 8-1 team over a Division II Puerto Rican school in the University of PR-Rio Piedras.

The Yellowjackets (4-2) had four double-winners on the day led by sophomore Camila Garcia who won at both the #1 singles and doubles positions.  Sravya Gudipudi and Alex Wolkoff were winners at #2 doubles and #2 and #3 singles respectively while Darby McCall (#3 doubles and #5 singles) was the final two-time winner on Wednesday.

Rochester picked up three 8-4 wins in doubles to open the contest.  Garcia paired with Lauren Zickar for a win over Karla Barbosa and Valeria Cotto.  Gudipudi and Wolkoff then topped Paula Orro and Angelica Troche at #2 and then Mariana Flores Kim and McCall finished off the sweep with a win over Cami Lee and Admiana Rodriguez.

In singles, Garcia topped Barbosa at the top spot 8-3 with Gudipudi following suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cotto at #2.

Wolkoff had her second win of the day at #3 over Rodriguez 6-1, 6-1 while McCall did the same at #5 over Troche 6-1, 6-2.  Alyssa Chaneski then earned UR's eighth point of the match with her 8-4 win at #6 over Lee.

Rio Piedras earned its lone victory on the day at the #4 position when Orro defeated Zickar 6-2, 6-3.

Rochester ended up playing Rio Piedras on Wednesday to replace the match against Nichols College because the Bison were unable to fly out of the storm in the northeast to get to Puerto Rico.
